Ehrmanns agrees partnership with Robert Oatley Vineyards

Robert OatleyEhrmanns announces their appointment as UK agent for Robert Oatley Vineyards (ROV). Family owned ROV was created in 2006 under the helm of world renowned wine craftsmen Robert Oatley and Chris Hancock MW, the creative forces behind Rosemount Estate.

Multi award winning Director of Winemaking Larry Cherubino has created a fantastic range of wines, focusing on regional strengths, to respond to different market needs.

The range will be divided into four tiers targeting emerging sectors such as Independents and e-commerce, as well as the traditional Premium Grocer and On Trade markets. The wines have been selected from quality varietals grown in premium areas such as Margaret River, McLaren Vale and the Mornington Peninsula. The aim of the brand is to get the consumer excited about Australia again and reinvigorate the category with fresh, modern, food friendly wines.

ROV have established themselves in the last 6 years as a major player in Australia and have achieved good distribution in the States and Canada. They believe Europe offers a great deal of potential and have appointed Barney Davis as General Manager UK & Europe to develop the brand here. Barney joins from the Company of Wine People and will start his new role on the 19th of March 2012, he will work in close partnership with Ehrmanns to build a strong presence in the British market.

Speaking on behalf of Ehrmanns, Director of Buying Joy Edmondson comments, “It is a privilege to be working with legendary wine professionals Robert Oatley, Chris Hancock and their team at Robert Oatley Vineyards. We could wish for no better partner to steer Australia through the current state of flux and into the second wave”.

Edmondson concludes, “We believe our latest partnership with ROV demonstrates how well Ehrmanns is progressing and how dedicated we are to sourcing the very best wines for our customers.”

Also commenting on the new relationship, Barney Davis (General Manager UK & Europe) said, “we are delighted to appoint Ehrmanns as our UK representative, they have a strong track record for building brands thanks to an efficient multi channel approach.  I am looking forward to developing the ROV portfolio with them in the UK.”

Each of these trade channels has its own dedicated sales and marketing team and offers a unique service to our customers.

Cheers to Dickens

Ehrmanns is proud to announce the sponsorship, from our prestigious Sherry Bodega Williams & Humbert, of the Celebrations of Dickens’s 200th Birthday.

During 2012 London will celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of one of its greatest writers, Charles Dickens (1812-1870). Jose Luis Jimenez, the academic from Jerez has been invited by the Dickens Museum director and commissionaire,  Florian Schweizer, for the bicentenary celebration. He will be presenting his Work: ‘Sherry with Dickens’, about the well claimed novelists relationship with the wine from Jerez, which featured so much in his Novels as well as in his private life. This commemorative event where the guests will raise glasses in memory of Dickens will feature these Sherries from Williams & Humbert:

‘Alegria’ Manzanilla – From the seaside town of Sanlucar de Barrameda, this Manzanilla has a pungent ‘yeasty’ aroma, light and fresh on the palate. ‘Alegria’ is the Spanish word for happiness.

‘Dry Sack’ Oloroso 15 Years Old – This is the first age dated Sherry on the market. From the finest Oloroso Soleras of at least 15 years old, we add a touch of 20 Year Old Certified V.O.S. (Very Old Sherry) Pedro Ximenez ‘Don Guido’ Sherry, to give a hint of sweetness on the finish.

Dos Cortados’ Palo Cortado V.O.S. 20 Years Old. A rarity, produced through ageing by oxidation of exceptionally fine wines. A delicate Fino or Manzanilla were the ‘Flor’ (layer of yeast) does not completely form and breaks up. This Sherry is aged with the oxidative process for a minimum of 20 years, it has a dark amber, bright mahogany colour and combines the delicate pungent nose of Amontillados and the structure and roundness of Olorosos.

Williams & Humbert Collection 12 Year Old Oloroso: This Sherry is created using the oxidative aging process in the Oloroso Criaderas and Soleras for a minimum of 12 years. Intense, walnut, nutty nose, very dry, rich with hints of nuts and fruits with a long finish.

‘Don Guido’ Pedro Ximenez  V.O.S. 20 Year Old Sherry: Once harvested, the Pedro Ximenez grapes are left under the Andalusian sun for about two weeks and become almost raisin. The Sherry is then aged in our Criaders and Soleras and is Certified by the Sherry Regulating Council as having an average age of at least 20 years, V.O.S. (Very Old Sherry). Mouth-wateringly luscious, smooth and velvety, very rich and sweet with a delightfully long aftertaste.

Dry Sack Medium: A blend of Oloroso, Amontillado and Pedro Ximenez sherry, each individually aged for 3 years in the Dry Sack Criadera, and then blended and further aged for another 3 years in the Dry Sack Criaderas and Soleras, producing a harmonious blend, with a deep yet delicate bouquet with hints of nuts and full on the palate.

Paternina Young Wines go ScrewCap!

Rioja wines have always been know as big and full bodied wines, especially their reservas and grand reservas, that by law require ageing in oak and bottle.  These characteristics have always proved very popular in the UK market especially amongst the traditional consumers.

Over the recent years the UK market has started to demand younger and lighter styles of Rioja with little or no oak and a more fruit driven palate. It is this style of wine that has become very popular in the UK on trade “by the glass” market. Consequently, when served in such a manner a screw cap bottle is much easier to serve, as well as retaining its freshness much better, and as a by product ensures that no cork tainting problems occur.

Aware of this trend from both the UK and export markets Paternina undertook the necessary steps by funding investigations to create the right wines, without losing their heritage. They wanted to supply a more modern style of young Rioja in a screw cap for the UK and for other export markets where the trend had started to emerge.

It’s a turning point for Rioja, not only in terms of the new style of wine, but also delivering a rejuvenated image thus attracting a much younger demographic who are able to consume these good value for money wines.

Ehrmanns are now able to deliver to the market these lighter young red, white and rose Rioja wines in screw cap.  Paternina has risen to the challenge by demonstrating that these modern styles still retain their traditional characteristics and image yet deliver all the freshness, body and great fruit character which the market demands.

Range Available in Screwcap:

Banda Dorada 2010 / 11

Banda Rosa 2010 / 11

Monte Haro Joven 2009 / 10

Portuguese wines rule !

Bacalhoa Wines of Portugal have proven once again that they totally deserve their spot at one of the most prestigious consumer tastings and were perfectly at ease among the world’s top wine producers. It all happened at the 15th Edition of the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter at the Landmark Hotel on 19th & 20th of November in London.

This tasting is by invitation only, producers have to meet the magazine’s list of criteria ( quality, distribution, relevance to the market ,etc…). The event brought together over 100 wineries and winemakers from all over the world and gathered more than 1800 wine lovers throughout the entire weekend.

After being awarded by Decanter the Regional Trophy for Best Fortified Sweet wine under £10 and the International Trophy for Best Fortified Sweet Wine under £10 Bacalhoa presented not only the best of their Fortified wines but also a carefully selected range of premium reds and 1 white from 2 different estates, Quinta da Bacalhoa in Setubal and Quinta do Carmo in Alentejo.

The Portuguese winery proudly represented by Ehrmanns is gaining more and more market recognition in the UK, and extremely positive feedback from consumers and the press.

There was a wine for every taste, expressing the character of the different terroirs and microclimates that Portugal has to offer. From the elegant and complex pair Quinta da Bacalhoa red and white, to the very special Palacio da Bacalhoa – deep red colour, powerful and very concentrated from the Bacalhoa estates in the Setubal Peninsula only produced in very special vintages. Also the new vintage of the Tinto da Anfora Grande Escolha 2008 from which only 14.000 bottles were released, the Tinto de Anfora 2008 and Dom Martinho 2008 – very rich and concentrated in aroma and flavour, all from the prestige estate Quinta do Carmo in Alentejo, and without forgetting the most acclaimed and very special dessert wines made by winemaker Filipa Tomaz Da Costa: the luscious Moscatel de Setubal Reserve 1999 and the new “Colheita” 2005  which were extremely well appreciated by the selective wine lovers and enthusiasts that attended the show during the weekend.

Bacalhoa Wines of Portugal continues in its drive to lead the industry in the cultivation and creation of new wines, whilst offering its consumers unique and innovative products of consistent and superior quality.

Do Not Underestimate Tahbilk Shiraz

Last week we showed a range of our Tahbilk wines at the Wines of Victoria tasting and they did not fail to impress. The 2007 Marsanne and the 1927 Vines Marsanne 2000 were being constantly praised, but the Shiraz’s were the surprise of the night. Many people mentioned how they had underestimated the ageing capacity of Shiraz and loved the opportunity to try the ESP Shiraz 2005 as it was a chance to try a Shiraz with a bit more age. This again shows the quality of the Tahbilk range and the interesting wines they produce.

Bacalhoa shines at the Wine Gang Christmas Fair

The Wine gang Logo

For the 2nd year in a row Ehrmanns proudly represented Bacalhoa Winery at the Wine Gang 2011 Christmas Fair, the event was held on the 29th October at Vinopolis.

The wine enthusiasts had the chance to taste a range of wines from Bacalhoa carefully selected for the event from the estates Quinta da Bacalhoa in Setubal and Quinta do Carmo in Alentejo. From the young and fruity JP’s White and Red to the more complex and full bodied Quinta da Bacalhoa White and Red, there was wine to cater for every taste.

Andre Neves – brand Manager for Bacalhoa – was also showing some very special wines : the new vintage of the Tinto da Anfora Grande Escolha 2008, a stunning wine of which only 14.000 bottles have been produced. The real star of the tasting however was Bacalhoa’s secret weapon : two very special dessert wines made by winemaker Filipa Tomaz Da Costa ; the beautiful award winning Moscatel de Setubal Reserve 1999 and the new vintage 2005. These fortified sweet wines from Bacalhoa are always a huge success and they did not disapoint. The overall feedback was unanimous – Excellent wines and amazing value. The wine expert Tom Cannavan selected Quinta da Bacalhoa White 2008 to present during one of the group tour tasting and very well appreciated by everyone.

Bacalhoa’s commitment in fusing tradition and innovation to produce wines of superior quality was well recognized by the general audience in a great consumer event.

New exciting addition to our portfolio – Finca Monteflores – Premium Fairtrade wine from Argentina

Worker at Finca MontefloresEhrmanns is very proud to announce its appointment as UK agent for Argentinian Fairtrade certified brand Finca Monteflores.  The range created by winery Casa Del Rey – which produces and markets iconic brand Alta Vista –  will be launched at the Wines of Argentina tasting in London and fully available in the UK from October 2011. Finca Monteflores will be exclusive to independent retailers whilst a sister brand is currently being developed for the Multiples and Impulse sectors.

Owned by the D’Aulan family, La Casa Del Rey winery was established in 1899 in Chacras de Coria, South of Mendoza city, with 220 hectares of vineyards and a production capacity over 2 millions bottles a year. The winery hosts state of the art equipment to produce premium wines and is fully integrated from vineyard to bottling

The new – Fairtrade certified – Finca Monteflores range includes a chardonnay and a malbec, with a suggested retail of £8.99 each. The grapes have been exclusively sourced from the winery’s vineyards situated both in the Lujan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco premium area.

Flores del Monte Association ( “Flower of the Mountain” ) is a partnership between La Casa del Rey winery and the community of its workers. The Association’s elected board is composed of a representative from each vineyard as well as two members of the winery.  The vineyard and the winery operations were Fairtrade certified in 2011. This community is made up of 58 families, 240 people in total who will benefit from the Fairtrade funds and program drawn by the board.Finca Monteflores Fairtrade Malbec

The winery is also careful about its impact on the environment from the vineyards to the winemaking and final bottling. Located at an altitude of over 3.000 feet above sea level within a dry climate, the vineyards are not susceptible to fungus and micro-organisms. No pesticides are used. Sulphur and copper, both natural substances, aare sprayed on the vineyards two to three times a year to control pests and bacteria, to ensure healthy conditions of the grapes.

The winery has an individual recycling program for : cardboard, paper, pallets, glass, plastics, complex caps and batteries. Monteflores wines are bottled in lighter, partly recycled bottles and recycled cardboard is used for the outer boxes.

The used waters of the winery are treated at 100% by OSM and re-used for agricultural irrigation.

The residue of grapes is re-used as fertilizer into the vineyards.

This is a fantastic addition to the Ehrmanns’ portfolio and a great example of good wine made ethically, we are hoping this will help lifting up the perception about Fairtrade wine and also be of great use to the  Flores Del Monte Association.

Philippe Meurant – the brand representative for the UK market – will be taking part in the Fairtrade debate organised by Harpers during the Wines of Argentina tasting – 3 pm on the 14th of September 2011 – Lords Cricket Ground – London
