New exciting addition to our portfolio – Finca Monteflores – Premium Fairtrade wine from Argentina

Worker at Finca MontefloresEhrmanns is very proud to announce its appointment as UK agent for Argentinian Fairtrade certified brand Finca Monteflores.  The range created by winery Casa Del Rey – which produces and markets iconic brand Alta Vista –  will be launched at the Wines of Argentina tasting in London and fully available in the UK from October 2011. Finca Monteflores will be exclusive to independent retailers whilst a sister brand is currently being developed for the Multiples and Impulse sectors.

Owned by the D’Aulan family, La Casa Del Rey winery was established in 1899 in Chacras de Coria, South of Mendoza city, with 220 hectares of vineyards and a production capacity over 2 millions bottles a year. The winery hosts state of the art equipment to produce premium wines and is fully integrated from vineyard to bottling

The new – Fairtrade certified – Finca Monteflores range includes a chardonnay and a malbec, with a suggested retail of £8.99 each. The grapes have been exclusively sourced from the winery’s vineyards situated both in the Lujan de Cuyo and Valle de Uco premium area.

Flores del Monte Association ( “Flower of the Mountain” ) is a partnership between La Casa del Rey winery and the community of its workers. The Association’s elected board is composed of a representative from each vineyard as well as two members of the winery.  The vineyard and the winery operations were Fairtrade certified in 2011. This community is made up of 58 families, 240 people in total who will benefit from the Fairtrade funds and program drawn by the board.Finca Monteflores Fairtrade Malbec

The winery is also careful about its impact on the environment from the vineyards to the winemaking and final bottling. Located at an altitude of over 3.000 feet above sea level within a dry climate, the vineyards are not susceptible to fungus and micro-organisms. No pesticides are used. Sulphur and copper, both natural substances, aare sprayed on the vineyards two to three times a year to control pests and bacteria, to ensure healthy conditions of the grapes.

The winery has an individual recycling program for : cardboard, paper, pallets, glass, plastics, complex caps and batteries. Monteflores wines are bottled in lighter, partly recycled bottles and recycled cardboard is used for the outer boxes.

The used waters of the winery are treated at 100% by OSM and re-used for agricultural irrigation.

The residue of grapes is re-used as fertilizer into the vineyards.

This is a fantastic addition to the Ehrmanns’ portfolio and a great example of good wine made ethically, we are hoping this will help lifting up the perception about Fairtrade wine and also be of great use to the  Flores Del Monte Association.

Philippe Meurant – the brand representative for the UK market – will be taking part in the Fairtrade debate organised by Harpers during the Wines of Argentina tasting – 3 pm on the 14th of September 2011 – Lords Cricket Ground – London

The Big Fortified Tasting – 6th of April 2011 – Glazier’s Hall

Ehrmanns is very proud to be part of The Big Fortified Tasting as we have two very strong brands to show : Moscatel BottleshotBacalhoa ( Moscatel – Portugal ) and Williams & Humbert ( Sherry – Spain ).

Bacalhoa – our Trophy winning brand – will be shown on Table 31.

Founded in 1922 in the heart of the Setubal peninsula, Bacalhoa is one of Portugal’s winemaking pioneers and leading wine producers. There are regular investments in new plantings and property acquisition with wineries in Alentejo, Setubal Peninsula ( Azeitao ),Lisbon, Bairrada, Dao and Douro. Bacalhoa is commited to fusing tradition and innovation to produce wines of superior quality.

In addition to the 2 Moscatels currently in our portfolio, we will be having a vertical tasting of moscatel from 1983 to 2004. This in one opportunity not to be missed.

Tim Atkin has just reviewed 4 of these wines – he wrote :

“1983 Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setubal Superior (18.5%)
Very dark colour, rich, oxidative. Molasses and figs on the nose, very very concentrated. Almost too much of a good thing? Old wood, cathedrals. Very, very sweet, PX-like again, but with some redeeming acidity. Possibly a little heavy on the palate. Very floral, rose petal, with just a touch of spirit/geranium on the finish.
92 points “

2000 Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setubal Roxo (18.5%)

Pale amber, bronze highlights. Nose dominated by spirit. Quite closed. More oak-influenced and the oak/ageing has dried the wine out a little, giving it a Sherry-like note. Rich palate, rancio/Rivesaltes notes. Nutty/figgy. Medium length. Slight heat on the back palate.

90 points

1999 Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setubal (18.5%)

Very pale, light bronze/amber. Hint of orange. Aromatic, but with a hint of geranium. Spirit-doninated. Dusty, time-etched. Very sweet, orange rind, molasses. Almost a quintessence. The Essencia of Moscatel? Spirity finish.
89 points  *This is also our IWC Trophy winner!

2004 Bacalhôa, Moscatel de Setubal (17.5%)
Very pale, ethereal colour, orange-tinged, browning, yet still very bright. Hugely varietal, orange marmalade nose. Palate very sweet with orange rind and some rose petal. Still young. Spirity finish with a slight alcoholic burn.
88 points”

Tahbilk’s Alister Purbrick named a Melbourne Food and Wine Legend

Alister Purbrick - Tahbilk

Alister Purbrick, CEO of Victoria’s oldest family owned winery, Tahbilk, has been inducted into the Melbourne Food & Wine Legends programme as part of the iconic 2011 Melbourne Food & Wine Festival.

Announced last week by Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, at a gathering of greats at the statuesque Melbourne Town Hall, Alister joins a list of illustrious past inductees including James Halliday, Gilbert Lau, Stephanie Alexander, Elizabeth Chong and Jacques Reymond amongst many others.

Tahbilk celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010 and this accolade continues the celebrations. Alister is a fourth generation Purbrick family member to work at Tahbilk Shiraz bottleTahbilk since his great-grandfather Reginald Purbrick bought the property in 1925. However, the Purbrick family connection to Tahbilk goes even further back with Reginald’s third cousin, James Escott Purbrick, hand digging the historic “new cellar” in 1875.

Tahbilk is situated in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria and boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in Australia (1860) and the world’s largest plantings of Marsanne including the oldest known vines (1927), responsible for the esteemed 1927 Old Vines Marsanne.

A distinguished contributor to the Australian wine industry over many years, this accolade holds special significance for Alister. “The Melbourne Food & Wine Festival is now recognised as one of the world’s leading festivals of its kind and to be even considered as a legend by the festival’s panel is a great honour. The team at Tahbilk has been building our reputation for fine wines, unique terroir and great value for many years….this wonderful acknowledgement is a testament to the hard work and commitment of many people, including five generations of Purbricks,” he said.

Tahbilk is a proud member of Australia’s First Families of Wine.

Fairtrade is number 9 in “Top 100 UK most desirable brands”

A recent research by brand consultancy Clear shown exclusively to Marketing Week tells that Fairtrade is number 9 in the “Top 100 UK most desirable brands”. Clear spoke to

4,000 UK consumers, giving each of them a set of brands they were familiar with, from a list of 300.Stellar Organics SB

People were asked about the extent they agreed with statements including the brand being one they respect, feel attracted to, are proud to be seen with, and one that they would love to use in the future.
They were also asked which adjectives they would apply to the brands they desire, such as sexy, exciting, spontaneous, ambitious, wellbeing-focused, sensible and careful.

Clear’s research segments people’s personalities based on the brands they most desire and how they describe themselves. Brands either play an aspirational role for people, or they mirror a person’s own values and beliefs.

About three-quarters of the 4,000 people surveyed show clear desire for brands with certain personality types. The remaining quarter don’t have this strong preference for particular brands.

Consumers were also asked about their own personalities, using the same adjectives used to describe the brands.

Fairtrade is linked to the following personality type :

Responsible citizens: Most of this group are over 25 years old and lag behind trends. They want brands that are focused on being careful and sensible, such as Fairtrade (9), Dettol (82) and AA (90). Marketers wanting to appeal to this group would do well to show social responsibility and be consistent in their communications.

Most desired brands: Red Cross, Fairtrade, Dettol, AA, Unicef and Post Office

Fairtrade has made it to the top 10 at position number 9, it fares better than luxury brands such as Agent Provocateur, Aston Martin, Gucci or Chanel,  interestingly,  it is also ahead of trendy brands such as Apple or Innocent.

The objective of the survey is to show that desirable brands can generate a higher return on investment for shareholders than a “normal” brand.

Giesen joins Ehrmanns’ portfolio

Giesen Brothers

Ehrmanns announces its appointment as the UK agent for Giesen Wines Ltd, a family owned New Zealand producer. Created in 1981 by the 3 Giesen brothers Theo, Alex and Marcel, the winery has been thriving; great winemaking skills combined with 700 acres of owned vineyards across the Wairau Valley in Marlborough and its own bottling line makes it a very attractive supplier for the international market. Giesen Estate Sauvignon Blanc is currently the 3rd biggest selling SKU in Australia. For the UK market, the range is divided in 3 tiers: Marlborough Ridge a volume driving range, Giesen Estates for the core range and The Brothers which is the premium tier. Ehrmanns will be looking to drive distribution across all trade channels for these ranges.

Giesen Wines Ltd have established themselves as a very flexible producer of a range of quality wines, and due to their size and economies of scale in other markets are able to provide the UK with consistency of style and supply. As the 6th largest producer in New Zealand our opportunities in European markets, with a focus on UK, are significant

Speaking on behalf of Ehrmanns, Director of Sales and Buyer for New Zealand Kim Wilson comments, “We are very pleased to have established a relationship with a winery well known for its exceptional quality and pioneering spirit. They are what I would call ‘future proofed’ and with their flexible approach I am confident that we have something different to offer the market with their wines. This is a very important addition to our portfolio as it further expands our offering from New Zealand.”

Working with Ehrmanns in the UK will give Giesen Wines Ltd access to all trade channels in the UK: Major Off Trade, Impulse, Independent Retailers/Online via Ehrmanns Independent Selection (EIS), and the On Trade. Each of these trade channels has its own dedicated Sales and Marketing team and offers a unique service to our suppliers.

Ehrmanns adds Organic producer Ascella Pure Wines

We are very proud to announce our appointment as UK agent for Australian producer Ascella Pure Wines. Ascella Pure Wines have the largest organic vineyard in the Hunter Valley. The full range will be available from October 2010 and will be exclusive to independent retailers.

The Ascella Pure Wine organic range includes Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Shiraz, with a suggested retail of £10.99 each. The Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz are vegetarian-friendly. Ascella Pure Red and Pure White wines will be exclusive to Whole Foods Market in London and will retail for £7.99 each.

Ehrmanns Managing Director Hugo Campbell comments, “We were immediately drawn to the point of difference Ascella offers and their dedication to making wine of excellent quality with practices that far exceed the organic certification requirements. Our Australian portfolio includes Tahbilk, Four Sisters and 3 Oceans and we are very pleased to be adding another producer with impressive credentials, and to be able to offer customers a range of wines from another Australian region.”

Owners Geoff and Barb Brown are committed to ensuring the purity of their products from vineyard to bottle. This includes testing grapes regularly for impurities which may have travelled by air and using only natural preservatives. They are possibly the only organic wine producer in the world to have every variety of wine tested for every chemical contaminant.
