The IWC is billed as the biggest and best independent blind tasting in the world, with more than 10,000 wines entered annually. 326 gold medals were awarded at this year’s competition.

Heaven on Earth, the organic Fairtrade vin de paille, first produced in 2003 at South Africa’s largest organic cellar, won a gold medal and the IWC Fairtrade Trophy. These prestigious awards are the latest in a string of local and international accolades for this outstanding dessert wine.

Produced by winemaker Dudley Wilson and cellar master Berty Jones, Heaven on Earth is made from Muscat d’Alexandrie grapes partially dried on indigenous Rooibos and organically-grown straw. The end product, a sweet golden nectar with delicate hints of Rooibos, apricots and roses, has achieved a deserved reputation as a unique regional wine.

Stellar Winery is one of the original Fairtrade wineries, having gained gcertification in 2004. Since then, the number of South African Fairtrade wineries and grape producers has risen exponentially, making the region one of the largest producers of Fairtrade wines along with Argentina and Chile. Stellar is also the number one organic wine brand in the UK.

IWC GoldFairtrade is an international system of standards for producers, and terms of trade for their goods that ensure farmers and workers in some of the poorest countries in the world are adequately protected and can build a more sustainable future.

The Fairtrade logo has become established as a credible, independent consumer guarantee for goods that are ethically produced and assists producers in developing countries to get a better deal from international trade.

The workers at Stellar are co-owners of the winery through the Stellar Empowerment Trust. Funding from Fairtrade sales is used to finance community- driven housing, health, educational and recreational projects.
