Glorious Godello

28 June 2013

Godello has come along way since the 70s when its popularity waned. The grape, grown in Galicia in Spain's northwest, is enjoying a revival proving that Spain can produce really superb white wines. Valdesil, based in Valdeorras in eastern Galicia, is home to the region's oldest Godello vines dating back to 1855 and produces a range of  Godellos at different quality levels, each of which have proved a hit with the wine writers.

David Williams writes of Valdesil Pezas de Portela in the Guardian  "this is Galicia's answer to top white burgundy, where the gorgeous ripe, slightly honeyed peach, pear and lemon are joined by white flowers and fennel-like herbs, the richness offset by mineral freshness." (June 2013)

In the Independent, Anthony Rose writes that the Valdesil Godello Sobre Lias has "intense stonefruit and honey-flecked concentration." (June 2013)

Decanter's Stephen Spurrier describes Valdesil Pezas de Portela as a "“remarkably pure wine, with florality, minerality and depth." (June 2012)

Adam Lechmere writes in Food and Travel Magazine of Valdesil Montenovo: "Lovely honey and freshly mown grass, white flowers and nettles on the nose. Deep ripe fruit, nervy acidity, juicy spcie and quince. Superb, delicious and long" (July 2013)

Valdesil was also the only winery with two white wines on the podium in the 2012 Guia Penin edition.
