Matthew Jukes' The Last of the Winter Whites
10 March 2014
Wine critic Matthew Jukes reviews 3 wines in the Daily Mail on 8th March 2014:
Before the weather lifts and we delve into fresh Spring like wines here are some heroic whites for you to savour.
2012 Robert Oatley, Signature Chardonnay, Margaret River, Western Australia: Talking about value, this is Australia’s answer to this week’s featured Bourgogne Blanc and it is a worthy rival. Slightly lusher and more exotic on the palate but with equally gripping acidity and well-judged oak this is an amazing wine made by the great Larry Cherubino.
2012 Valdesil, Godello, Sobre Lias, Valdeorras, Spain. The Godello grape is a fleshy, mildly tropical one but it has stunning, palate-cleansing acidity which snaps your taste buds back into order after each creamy sip. Hauntingly beautiful and heavenly with fish dishes this is a dreamboat of a wine and a grape variety which you should introduce yourself to as soon as you possibly can.
2012 Painted Wolf Wines Black Pack Rousanne, Paarl, South Africa: The ‘Roussanne’ grape is a rare one. Its home is the Rhône Valley where it is often blended with Marsanne and Viognier. There are a few plantings further afield and they always catch my eye. This is a delicious example with a beguiling white peach nose, sleek palate and gripping, nervy acidity. Wow – what a delicious wine!
